What Is Red-Letter Living
Many Bibles have the Words of Jesus printed in red letters. Red-Letter Living is giving specific and concentrated attention to the red letters: those Words of Jesus. The object is to know them and to live them. Much of Christendom has sunk into an academic or theological existence, creating an “idea God.” God has become an idea about whom we jostle and debate our ideas.
However, genuine Christianity is about living the ideas, His ideas. Even having a right theology does not get one to success, neither in this life nor in eternity. Jesus said it in red, “Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man . . .” (Matthew 7:24). Red-Letter Living is doing the Words of Jesus.
How Red-Letter Living Overcomes Deception
The Scriptures are designed to undeceive the deceived: to expose deception by revealing the truth. We are instructed in James 1:22, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” It may well be that the deceit of all deceits is to think, feel, and believe that a knowledge of God, no matter how accurate it is—along with selective acceptance and selective obedience—makes a person safe and secure and on their way to heaven, thus avoiding hell. Watch out! It is not merely the hearing of the red letters, the words and sayings of Jesus, but the doing of them that counts. Doing the Words of Jesus is Red-Letter Living.
What About The Black Letters
The black letters of the Bible are also important. We know this, because the Scriptures themselves say, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable . . .” (2 Timothy 3:16). The black letters are important, but many of them are not as applicable as the red letters, the Words of Jesus. For example, in Christianity 101, we learned the difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. The old is replaced by the new.
How Important Are the Red Letters
As you progress to the doing of the red letters you will find them to be the following: 1) wisdom- producing; 2) an effective and sure guide to life; 3) stabilizing; 4) gracious; 5) philosophically impeccable; 6) cleansing in their effect; 7) precise directions from God; and 8) life-giving.
The Supremacy of The Red Letters
The red letters are superior to any and every speech, oration, writing, or communication in all of human history. As the witnesses, and even the critics, declared, “Never man spake like this man” (John 7:46). What makes the Words of Jesus, the red letters, so very great?
1) They reveal incredible truths.
2) They produce miraculous results.
3) The give hope to those in despair, joy to those with broken hearts, and peace that subdues paralyzing fears.
4) They have transformative powers that turn a hateful heart to a loving one, a greedy mind to one overflowing with generosity, and arrogance into a servant spirit,
5) They give sight to the blind, deliverance to the captives, forgiveness to the wrongdoer, and life to the dead.
The Test of Red-Letter Living
When I come to realize that some aspect of my life does not line up with Jesus’ Words, do I make the necessary changes immediately and joyfully and permanently?
